REGULAR EVENTS
- Young Eagles
- The 2008 Young Eagles season is well along. The next free Young Eagles flights will take place on
September 13, 2008 (weather permitting). Be at the EAA 838 Chapter Building before 9:00 am for your preflight briefing!
- Young Eagles gives kids (8-17) a chance to experience the wild blue yonder with a free mini-ground school course followed by a free flight! We meet on the second Saturday of the month. Young aviators must be there by 9:00 am sharp to participate. Call ahead for availability, and we ask large groups to pre-register to ensure we may accommodate everyone. If the weather isn’t suitable for flying, you can still attend the ground school and then get a raincheck for your free flight on another Young Eagles Saturday. Come fly with us!
- The 2007 season of Young Eagles saw EAA 838 flight a record number of kids! Thank you to everyone who made this possible, from our pilots and ground crew to our parents and kids! Let’s make our 2008 season even better!
- Hangar Craftsmen’s Builder Night
- Do you like to work with your hands? That’s what these guys do on Monday nights. No, they don’t do cross-stitch, but they do have big needles for stitching the wings! Watch that they don’t put a stitch in your side. Come join us from 7–9 pm and watch a real airplane get built from the ground up. See the Chapter 838 Hangar. Check out the Chapter Calendar for the next meeting.

- Pancake Breakfasts
- Delicious pancakes cooked to a golden brown on our industrial-sized, hot-rodded, homebuilt griddle. An 838 tradition guaranteed to make your clothes fit just a wee bit tighter around the middle. To Be Announced.

- Every summer, we hold a picnic for chapter members in place of one of our chapter meetings. This year’s picnic is August 9, 2008. We’ll provide burgers, dogs, brats, and chicken, roasted corn on the cob, pop, and coffee, but bring a dish to share!
- Annual Chapter Holiday Party
- Come in from the cold for an evening of good food with family and friends amidst beautiful airplanes! What more could you ask from a Wisconsin winter’s night?
- Our 2007 party took place on December 8, and everyone had an excellent time dining amidst the airplanes in a cozy hangar. Congratulations to Phil Fountain, Chapter 838 Board Member, who took home the 2007 President’s Award. More Photos…

- Speed Racer Unveils Mach 6
- Actually, no: it’s actually the hypersonic test vehicle, the X-51A Waverider. This is now being tested Boeing’s Palmdale test facility, with the first flight test planned for December 2.
- Powered by a radical scramjet designed to fire for more than 300 seconds. Seems short? nope, that’s 30x longer than earlier scramjets! Remember, this is an engine operating under exceptionally high temperatures and pressures. More details…
- “…Bang, Zoom,
Straight to the Moon!”
- NASA, in conjunction with the Air Force Office for Strategic Research, recently launched a rocket featuring a safe, environmentally-friendly propellant they’ve dubbed “ALICE”. The compound consists of water and extremely finely-powdered aluminum, blended together in a goo with the consistency of toothpaste. NASA sent the 9" rocket aloft near Purdue University, reaching a height of nearly 1400".
- Indians, Japanese Stealth Projects
- Indian and Russian are jointly-developing the Su 50, a stealth fighter based on the Sukhoi 47. The aircraft is expected to fly next year, and features a drastic reduction in the aircraft’s radar signature, and the ability to ‘super cruise’ (jet engines that fly stealthily without engaging noisy afterburners even at supersonic speeds), and will support embedded weapons with the capability to engage multiple ground, sea and air targets and seamless communication between the fighter, other aircraft and ground stations.
- Meanwhile, development continues apace on Japan’s homegrown stealth fighter, the Mitsubishi ATD-X ShinShin, with similar specifications to both the now-cancelled F-22 and the Su 50. The program has been beset with funding difficulties, however, so it remains to be seen if the program will continue after the change in government.
