GETTING
FROM HERE TO THERE
Just like driving a car, maps are used to help pilots get from one
airport to another. These special maps, called sectional charts, contain
a lot of information for the pilot. There are symbols that represent
roads and railroad tracks just like on highway maps. There are also
symbols the represent other objects that pilots must watch out for, like
tall radio towers and smokestacks. Colors represent bodies of water and
terrain elevation. Colors also represent information about various
airports, such as runways that are hard surfaced or grass, and airports
with control towers. Radio navigation aids are shown in graphic form
along with the "Highways in the Sky".
Look at the chart legend to see what the various symbols mean. Then
look at the pictures and at the physical features that are depicted by
the symbols. Some of the physical features are quite obvious. There are
others that you will have to look at the picture very closely in order
to identify them.
